An interview with Lori. Listen.

Oh, how Lori loves a happy ending!

I’ve always been a daydreamer, weaving elaborate stories in my head long before I actually became a writer, and I was a writer long before I became a published author. It took five years and over ten manuscripts (two of them in #2 pencil in long-hand!) before I finally got “the call”. (Yes, that tells my age. I started writing pre-computer era!)

I didn’t know I wanted to write. It wasn’t until I was grown, had worked various jobs, and was busy with three kids that I discovered romance novels. Unhappy endings aren’t very entertaining, in my opinion, and romance is the only genre I know that offers such a great variety — comedy, paranormal, suspense, family-oriented, contemporary and historical — and still guarantees that happy ending.

Within two years of reading that first romance novel, I went from being a reader to privately penning the type of books I loved to read – super-sexy, character-driven stories with elements of action and danger. The women I write don’t fall to pieces when something doesn’t go right in their lives. My male leads can be intense, quiet, outspoken and outrageous (love those outrageous guys!) deadly or fun… they come with their own issues, of course, but at the core they’re honorable, willing to protect those who can’t protect themselves.

Readers have often asked me if I write from life. I have to admit, some of the funniest lines in my books came from one of my 3 sons or my husband. They’re all pretty hilarious. People have often called romance an escape, but I think it’s more of an affirmation — in romance novels people have problems, they overcome them, and they end up happy. Isn’t that we all want in life?

I’m a fan of hard rock music, action and horror movies, water skiing and boat rides, and the sunrise and sunset. These days my husband does most of the cooking and he knows my preferences, like green beans and ham, sauerkraut and ribs, beef stew… most one-pot meals! I’m a homebody, but when I do travel I prefer to do it in the RV. Take me anywhere near water or mountains and I’m happy!

I’ve been blessed in so many ways, and I really want everyone else to be just as happy as I am. My husband and I have been together a very long time. (I met him the 3rd day of my sophomore year of high school and it was love at first sight!) He’s my best friend, my own personal hero, and the finest man I know. We have each other, three wonderful sons, and a growing posse of utterly adorable grandkids.

I can’t imagine a better job than mine. I get to do something I love every single day (like, seriously, every-single-day… otherwise, with my publication schedule, I’d fall dreadfully behind!) and have the absolute best readership an author could hope for! You’re all so incredibly wonderful and I appreciate you more than I can say, which is why I do so many giveaways on social media like Facebook, Twitter, and Goodreads. Because I adore you all so much, each year I host a Reader Author Get Together (RAGT). If you haven’t been, imagine a giant, super fun party for book lovers with 70 to 100 authors and 300 or more readers with time for parties, meals, raffles, workshops, and plenty of time for casual chatting and photos, all wrapped around a couple of massive booksignings. Proceeds go toward worthy causes, like caring for abused children and helping homeless pets. Check out the event to see exactly where funds are allocated.

One of my favorite parts of RAGT is the benefit book. Every year I write another novella with all advance and royalties for the book go to a wonderful, local cause. In the beginning the books benefited our deployed men and woman, the YWCA Battered Women’s Shelter, and more. Starting in 2013, I decided that the proceeds from the benefit books would go to the Animal Adoption Foundation.

Immediately below is a full list of my benefit books, the newest one listed first. For more info about the causes close to my heart, keep reading below the benefit books.
